The Halászbástya Hungary

Halászbástya (Fisherman's Bastion), a terrace in neo-Gothic and neo

If there's one thing that draws me to Budapest, it's the magnificent architecture. Every corner is a new surprise waiting to be discovered, and one of my personal favourites is Halászbástya (Fisherman's Bastion).

This beautiful terrace is a neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque structure, built between 1895 and 1902. Located on the Buda side of the Danube, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city, including the Hungarian Parliament Building and the Széchenyi Chain Bridge.

As much as there is to admire now, the history of Halászbástya is just as fascinating. Initially built as part of the Buda Castle complex, the terrace's main function was to serve as a lookout point in case of danger. It took its name from the guild of fishermen who were responsible for defending that stretch of the wall during the Middle Ages, often at great personal risk. Over time, it has gone through several renovations and transformations, ultimately turning into the beautiful landmark we know today.

History

Built in the late 19th century, Fisherman's Bastion is a testament to the rise of neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque architecture during that time. At this point in Budapest's history, it was seen as the Paris of the east, and the government was investing heavily in art and culture, buildings and infrastructure. As part of these efforts, Halászbástya was commissioned by Frigyes Schulek, a renowned architect of the time, and built by the Buda Castle's expansion and reconstruction team.

After serving as a defensive structure during World War II, the terrace fell into disrepair for several decades. The renovation undertaken in 1983-1984 was impressive, with entire sections of the terrace rebuilt to restore it to its original state, based on the findings of archaeological excavations.

Since then, the site has become one of the most famous landmarks in Budapest, attracting tourists from all over the world who come to admire its beauty and take in the spectacular views it offers.

Travel Tips

Visitors to Budapest are encouraged to visit Halászbástya to take in its beauty and history. With its intricate details, magnificent balconies, and carved stone sculptures, the terrace is a true work of art. Furthermore, because it is located on top of a hill, the view of the city is simply breathtaking.

During summertime, access to the terrace is free of charge, but visitors need to pay a fee to enter the tower. The tower's entrance fee is relatively inexpensive, and the view from the top is breathtaking. You'll get a superb bird's eye view of Budapest and the River Danube.

It's important to note that Halászbástya is a popular tourist destination, and therefore can get crowded. To avoid the crowds, it's best to visit early in the morning or after sunset.
