Once inside the basilica, I was flabbergasted by the sheer beauty of it. You may have seen images of the interior before, but trust me, it's so much more impressive in person. In fact, there are so many details to take in, it's almost overwhelming. It's said to contain the world's largest collection of priceless treasures, and it's easy to see why. From grand works of art by Michelangelo, to the delicate mosaics that cover the walls, the Vatican is a feast for the eyes. Even if you have no interest in art or history, it's hard to not appreciate the immense grandeur.
Another highlight was the view from the top of the Basilica. I'm sure you've seen postcards of the piazza from above but actually seeing it with your own eyes is hard to beat. The view offers a great 360° view of Rome, and you can spy some of the city's other famous landmarks like the Colosseum, Roman Forum and the Pantheon in the distance. Although the climb up can be a bit tiring, the view is worth it.
If you're planning a visit to the Vatican, don't forget to check out the Sistine Chapel. Although the chapel is just one small part of the Vatican, it's one of the most famous attractions. The artwork by Michelangelo on the ceiling is simply incredible – and that's an understatement. Maybe you've seen images of the ceiling before, but you won't be prepared for how dramatic it is in real life.
Even if you're not sure you'll enjoy the art inside, it's definitely worth the time to visit the Vatican if you have the chance. But be aware that it can get busy, so it's best to book in advance to save time waiting in line.
